Dow Jones Average Wins Intial 2012 Bout

April 20, 2012 by Jonathan R
On Saturday, April 14th, the Dow Jones Average, New York’s B-Team, rang in victory over the Rollin Regulators (Cecil County, MD) 176-66.  The many spectators of the doubleheader bout, hosted by the Pottstown Roller Derby Rockstars (PRDR), also saw the Flogging Mollies defeat Damaged Incorporated.

The Dow Jones Average hit the market at full strength in the very 1st jam.  DJA Captain Atticus Flinch banged out a big 25-0 jam over Regulators Captain Abe Froman who was called off for a penalty.  That would be far and away the biggest jam of the game.  In Jam 2, the Average, extended their lead as jammer Shoots and Splatters made 3 scoring passes for a 14-0.  The Regulators, unable to make up that deficit, trailed the rest of the game.  The second biggest jam would come 11 jams later as debut DJA skater Buster Cheatin’ broke out of the pack for a 17-4 win.  In the second half, the audience erupted for a jam by their hometown hero, Harm’s Way, who picked up lead and 7 points.  The steady score building of the DJA gave them a safe win of 176-66 despite having problems containing Regulators jammer Truth Hurtz.  He scored the most points for his team (23).  Shoots and Splatters scored the most for the Average with 55.  MVP honors went to Scooter McGoot (DJA) and Carnage Asada (Rollin Regulators).

NYSE All-Stars Win 2012 Season Opener

April 5, 2012 by Jonathan R

On Saturday, March 31st, the NY Shock Exchange All-Stars defeated the Harm City Homicide (Baltimore, MD) 366-86 at a doubleheader bout hosted by Shore Points Roller Derby. The Shore Points Broadwalk Brawlers bested the Jerzey Derby Brigade Coporal Punishers 202-46 first and the men took the track second.

Harm City took an early lead as Carnage Asada took 12 points in a power play over Jonathan R’s 9 in the 1st jam.  The Shock Exchange got on top in the second jam with a quick 4-0 by jammer Ladies Knight.  Two huge jams later, including a 35-0 (an unofficial MRDA Sanctioned record), the Shockers had a solid lead of 73-16.  Harm City’s resilent jammers continued to put up points but not enough to match the NYSE’s compounding lead.  Stifling mega defense by Shockers, including Abe Drinkin (+ 234 pts), Maulin Brando (+ 165), and Jefferee (+ 189), characterized a 78-0 run around the end of the 1st half to firmly take control of the game.  The final score was 366-86.

Bout Recap: Squares thwart Freakshow 183-126

February 16, 2012 by Jonathan R
With a final score of 183-126, the Union Squares claimed another clean victory over the Coney Island Freakshow to retain the New York Shock Exchange Roller Derby Winner Ball Trophy.  The bout started out a close back-and-forth with the Freaks holding a 10 point edge heading into jam #10. A relentless wall of Union Squares, Jefferee, Filthy McNasty, The Dalai Bomber, and Captain Abe Drinkin, dominated jam #10 to give their jammer, Ladies Knight a big 25 points. The Freaks clawed back with Ronnie Mako’s 8-0 in the next jam to make the score 33-40 in favor of the Squares. Two jams later, Squares jammer, Shoots and Splatters, capitalized on a power play for a 19-2 win. Once again, the Freaks chipped away at the lead but another big power play paved the way for Squares jammer Starsky to rack up a 16-0. At the half, it was 93-53 Squares.

The Freakshow mounted its comeback as the second half began. They scraped the Squares lead down to 17 but then the Squares blasted back with a 38-0 run across 3 jams over boxed Freakshow jammers. The final knockout punch was delivered in jam #42 by Squares blockers, Abe Drinkin, Filthy McNasty, Harm’s Way, and Starsky. Ladies Knight sailed through the pack with ease and triumphantly flaunted a “square” hand signal. Jonathan R answered with a 13-3 in the next jam but it was too little too late. The Squares control, and fewer major penalties, had given them the 183-126 victory. The Freaks take solace in playing a closer game than their last 213-53 loss while gaining experience for their three new, promising rookies.

Ladies Knight led scoring for the Squares with 85 points. Shoots and Splatters, playing in only his second bout ever, scored the 2nd most points, 36, and earned the Squares MVP honor. For the Freaks, Jonathan R scored the most, 71, and took home the team MVP award.
The Shock Exchange would like to thank the hosts of the 2012 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, the Long Island Roller Rebels, who held a spectacular Pink vs. Black game, which Team Pink won 97-126. Additionally, the NYSE would like to thank the referees and officials for pulling double duty as well as the volunteers including the EMT, videographer, and merchandise salespeople. Finally, the Shock Exchange appreciates the wonderful audience including a remote controlled flying shark and many skaters from the Pottstown Roller Derby Rockstars and Gotham Girls Roller Derby.

Bout Preview: Freakshow Vs. Squares (2/11)

February 4, 2012 by Jonathan R

On February 11th, the 2012 New York Shock Exchange Roller Derby Season begins with a Coney Island Freakshow/Union Squares battle at the St. Valentine’s Massacre in Long Island.  The hosting Roller Rebels start the night off with a Pink Vs. Black bout featuring their newest “Fresh Blood” graduates.  The Shockers take the track second.

In their last clash, the Squares dominated the Freaks 213-53
.  The Freakshow seek vengeance but with the loss of blockers Wolfgang Von Stomp and Vader they will have their work cut out for them. The Squares domination could easily continue with the acquisition of new skaters, The Dalai Bomber # 15th and Sammy Dangerfield # 0, both of whom debuted in the Dow Jones Average victory last year. Meanwhile, the Freaks unleash 3 hot new rookies, Crow Magnum # .357, Scooter McGoot # VR60, and Willverine #10. Can the upstarts pull off the upset? Or will the Squares pound the nail deeper into their heads?
